Martin made the "D16M" as a limited run between 1986 and 1991. The D16M is not similar to the basic Martin D16 series. It is actually closer to the D18-V with standard build specs, forward shifted scalloped bracing, (aka Vintage) and dovetail neck joint.
This guitar is one of Martin's hidden treasures of the discontinued models, because it was a hard sell against the D18's while this was in the line. The D-16M was made from 1986-1990 with a total production of 2,120 guitars. Within that time frame they also made the A, K, and W models. Production numbers for them were 818, 390, and 138 respectively. The D-16T came along in 1995 with the TR joining in 1996.
